Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and at Wadham and Oriel Colleges, Oxford, he served in the Peninsular War and was the high-church rector of Plymtree, Devon (1832-68. His account of the demise of the Hamel party on Mont Blanc was published in the New Monthly Magazine.
