The son of John Arden, educated at Trinity College, Cambridge; an ally of William Pitt, he was solicitor-general (1782), MP for Aldborough (1784-90), Hastings (1790-94) and Bath (1794-1801), and Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas (1801).
