John Gibson Lockhart to Mary Anne Hughes, 24 January 1853

“My dear Mrs.
Hughes,—I do not need to be told of your sympathy in the
misfortunes of my poor house, but I am not the less sensible and grateful.
“Accept my cordial thanks, dear friend of better
days, and when you see your son, give

John Hughes (1790-1857)
The son of Thomas Hughes, vicar of Uffington; educated at Westminster School and at Oriel
College, Oxford, he wrote for the magazines and was the father of Thomas Hughes, author of
Tom Brown's Schooldays.
Mary Anne Hughes [née Watts] (1770-1853)
Literary hostess, the wife of Thomas Hughes of Uffington (1756-1833); she contributed to
the
Literary Gazette and corresponded with Sir Walter Scott and
Caroline Bowles Southey. She was the grandmother of the author of
Tom
Brown's Schooldays.
John Gibson Lockhart (1794-1854)
Editor of the
Quarterly Review (1825-1853); son-in-law of Walter
Scott and author of the
Life of Scott 5 vols (1838).
