October 19th, 1849, Putney.
My dear Mrs. Clarke,—Will you comply with
the wish of my correspondent? The Yankees,
it appears, are suspicious folks. I thought them Arcadians.—Truly yours,

Born in Aberdeen, he was editor of the
London Literary Gazette
before emigrating to New York before 1831, from whence he corresponded with the Cowden
Clarkes; Mary Cowden Clarke's letters to him were published in 1902 as
Letters to an Enthusiast.
Mary Victoria Cowden Clarke [née Novello] (1809-1898)
The daughter of the musician Vincent Novello, she married Charles Cowden Clarke in 1828
and wrote works on Shakespeare, including
The Complete Concordance to
Shakespeare (1845).
Douglas William Jerrold (1803-1857)
English playwright and miscellaneous writer; he made his reputation with the play
Black-eyed Susan (1829) and contributed to the
Athenaeum,
Blackwood's, and
Punch.
