The “Pope” of Holland House
John Whishaw to Thomas Smith, 22 March 1817
March 22, 1817.
I have been much engaged for several days with poor Leonard Horner, who was here on his return from
Pisa. He has been extremely harassed, and

his health has suffered a good
deal, but I trust not permanently or materially. The account he gives of his
brother’s last moments is in many
respects very consolatory. He suffered no pain, and seems not to have been
conscious of his approaching dissolution. For some days he had felt himself much
better, and even flattered himself with the hopes of travelling the next summer
circuit on horseback! The night before his death he had his Italian master with him
for two hours, and read the greater part of a canto of Tasso, repeating at the same time from memory several corresponding
passages from Virgil.
