“Sir,
“Mr. Secretary
Canning directs me to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of
the 23d instant, renewing your request, that his majesty’s government
would interfere to procure the liberation of your son, who having engaged in
the Greek service, has since been pressed into that of Ibrahim Pasha, and acquaints you that an
answer on this subject has been returned to Mr.
Hamilton, through whom your original application was made.
George Canning (1770-1827)
Tory statesman; he was foreign minister (1807-1809) and prime minister (1827); a
supporter of Greek independence and Catholic emancipation.
William Richard Hamilton (1777-1859)
British diplomat who superintended the removal of the Elgin Marbles and trustee of the
British Museum; author of
Memoir on the Subject of the Earl of Elgin's
Pursuits in Greece (1811).
Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt (1789-1848)
The son of Muhammad Ali of Egypt; he was the Egyptian general who led Turkish forces
against the Wahabis in Arabia (1816-19) and the revolutionaries in Greece (1825-28).
James Millingen (1774-1845)
Educated at Westminster, he worked at the French mint and became an authority on coins
and antiquities based in Paris and Italy; he was the father of Julius Millingen, physician
at Missolonghi.
Joseph Planta (1744-1827)
Born in Switzerland, he was keeper of manuscripts, and from 1799 principal librarian at
the British Museum.
