“Bruges, 4th July, 1817.
“We shall make an excursion to Antwerp from Brussels
instead of taking it on our way, and consequently shall arrive the day after
to-morrow by the Ghent road. We are all well and much delighted

with the country. How can
such a fertile country want bread? and why, when it (bread) has fallen at Ypres
and even Courtray, is it at the same price here? Allen, though he bears Adam
Smith and M. Marcot in his head, cannot
solve this. . . .”
John Allen (1771-1843)
Scottish physician and intimate of Lord Holland; he contributed to the
Edinburgh Review and
Encyclopedia Britannica and published
Inquiry into the Rise and Growth of the Royal Prerogative in
England (1830). He was the avowed atheist of the Holland House set.
William Cavendish, fifth duke of Devonshire (1748-1811)
Whig peer, the son of William Cavendish, fourth duke of Devonshire; after succeeding to
the title in 1764 he married the famous Lady Georgiana Spencer in 1774.
Sir Augustus William James Clifford, first baronet (1788-1877)
The illegitimate son of William Cavendish, fifth duke of Devonshire, and Lady Elizabeth
Foster; educated at Harrow, he was a naval officer, MP for Bandon (1818-20, 1831-32) and
Dungarvan (1820-22), and Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod (1832-77).
Thomas Creevey (1768-1838)
Whig politician aligned with Charles James Fox and Henry Brougham; he was MP for Thetford
(1802-06, 1807-18) Appleby (1820-26) and Downton (1831-32). He was convicted of libel in
1813.
Adam Smith (1723-1790)
Friend of David Hume and professor of logic at Glasgow University (1751); he wrote
Theory of the Moral Sentiments (1759) and
The
Wealth of Nations (1776).
