Charles William Wentworth Fitzwilliam, third earl Fitzwilliam (1786-1857)
Son of the second earl (d. 1833); educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, he was a Whig
MP for Malton (1806-07), Yorkshire (1807-30), Peterborough (1830), and Northamptonshire
(1831-31).
George Ponsonby (1755-1817)
The son of John Ponsonby (d. 1787); he was speaker of the Irish House of Commons, lord
chancellor of Ireland in the Fox-Grenville ministry (1806) and succeeded Lord Grey as
leader of the Whigs in the British House of Commons.
Arthur Wellesley, first duke of Wellington (1769-1852)
Soldier and statesman; commander in the Peninsular Campaign (1809-1813), he defeated
Napoleon at Waterloo and was prime minister (1828-1830).
