“Tower, 27th.
“. . . Grey
would not go to the Duke of
Wellington’s last night, tho’ invited to meet the
King; but he had an audience with the
King during the day to apologise for so doing. Lady
Grey, too, was at the Opera, instead of being with her King and
Queen. How like them both! and yet I
suppose it was wrong.”
Queen Adelaide (1792-1849)
The daughter of George Frederick Charles, duke of Saxe-Meiningen and consort of William
IV, whom she married in 1818.
Charles Grey, second earl Grey (1764-1845)
Whig statesman and lover of the Duchess of Devonshire; the second son of the first earl
(d. 1807), he was prime minister (1831-34).
