The Creevey Papers
Thomas Creevey to Elizabeth Ord, 20 May 1833
“May 20th.
“. . . There is the greatest fuss about the
turn-out at Sefton’s to-day. I
don’t know if you remember a picture of Charles
X. in the dining-room, sent to the
Sefton’s by the King himself. The Dino says it is absolutely impossible that the
Duc d’Orleans can sit opposite
that picture at dinner, and yet says that, in the situation of the
Seftons, she would die rather than it should be taken
away; so all she prays of them is that it may not be in the dining-room.”
King Charles I of England (1600-1649)
The son of James VI and I; as king of England (1625-1649) he contended with Parliament;
he was revered as a martyr after his execution.
Charles X, King of France (1757-1836)
He was King of France 1824-1830 succeeding Louis XVIII; upon his abdication he was
succeeded by Louis Philippe, duc d'Orléans.
Dorothée, duchesse de Dino (1793-1862)
The daughter of Dorothea von Medem, Duchess of Courland, she was the lover of Talleyrand
and spouse of his nephew. In 1831 Maria Edgeworth described her as “little, and
ugly—plain, I should say.”
Louis Philippe, king of the French (1773-1850)
The son of Louis Philippe II, Duke of Orléans; he was King of France 1830-48; he
abdicated following the February Revolution of 1848 and fled to England.
