The Creevey Papers
Earl of Sefton to Thomas Creevey, 26 April 1828
“Newmarket, April 26th, 1828.
“The great fun of the week was the defeat of the
Grosvenors, who all came from every part of the world
to see Navarino win in a canter. He is the worst horse at Newmarket, and they
have been deluded by their trainer Dilly, who made them
believe he had beat Mameluke in a trial. Think of a man of £200,000 a year
sending his horses to a notorious rascal who trains for Gully, Redesdale and Stuart! They make use of his
horses for their betting.”
John Gully (1783-1863)
English prize-fighter who made a fortune in horse-racing and was afterwards MP for
Pontefract (1832-37).
John Freeman- Mitford, first baron Redesdale (1748-1830)
Brother of the historian William Mitford; he was MP for Beeralston (1788),
attorney-general (1799), speaker of the house (1801) and lord chancellor of Ireland
(1802).
