Thomas Creevey to Elizabeth Ord, 15 October 1828
“Lyons, co. Kildare [Lord Cloncurry’s], 15th Oct., 1828.
“. . . I arrived here on Monday, and found Lord and Lady
William Paget, Lord and
Lady Erroll, Lord Forbes, and three or four other men. My
eye! how Lady Erroll puts me in mind of her mother—Acting Nell
or Miss Hoyden. We became kind of cronies from the very
first minute. If you come to that—Lady William Paget
and I were very fair too, to say nothing of the civilities to me of the young
men their husbands. . . . The Angleseys did
not come till yesterday. Greatly to my annoyance I sat next to her at dinner. The young men,
Erroll and Co., made me do so, the Duke of Leinster not having arrived, as he always
walks out to dinner, however distant. He did not
arrive till it was at least half over. Our Lord-

Lieutenant* was as gracious as possible—gave me his opinion about
Ireland last night in the most unreserved manner . . . that it was his firm
opinion that if the Irish people had but justice done them, they would be a
happy and prosperous nation.”
George John Forbes, viscount Forbes (1785-1836)
The son of George Forbes, sixth Earl of Granard, he was an Irish military officer, MP for
County Longford (1806-32, 1833-36), and Lord-Lieutenant of County Longford.
Dorothy Jordan [née Phillips] (1761-1816)
Irish actress; after a career in Ireland and the provinces she made her London debut in
1785; at one time she was a mistress of the Duke of Clarence.
Lady Charlotte Paget, marchioness of Anglesey [née Cadogan] (1781-1853)
The daughter of Charles Sloane Cadogan, first Earl Cadogan; after her marriage with Henry
Wellesley, first Baron Cowley in 1803 she eloped with Henry William Paget, first Marquess
of Anglesey whom she married after a duel, trial for criminal conversation, and
divorce.
Lady Frances Paget [née de Rottenburg] (d. 1875)
The daughter of Lt.-Gen. Francis de Rottenburg, Baron de Rottenburg; in 1827 she married
Lord William Paget.
Henry William Paget, first marquess of Anglesey (1768-1854)
Originally Bayly, educated at Westminster and Christ Church, Oxford; he was MP
(1790-1810), commander of cavalry under Sir John Moore, lost a leg at Waterloo, and raised
to the peerage 1815; he was lord-lieutenant of Ireland (1828-29, 1830-33).
Lord William Paget (1803-1873)
The son of the first marquess of Anglesey; he was a captain in the Royal Navy.
