The Autobiography of William Jerdan
Augustus Granville Stapleton to William Jerdan, 7 May 1827
“Downing Street, May 7, 1827.
“Sir,
“I have laid before Mr.
Canning, your letter of the 5th inst., to which he has given
every attention. He has come, however, to the conclusion, that, considering
that one of the great grounds of attack on the Government, is the influence
possessed by it over the Press, it is absolutely necessary that he should have
it in his power to deny in the House of Commons as distinctly as he now can do,
and as Lord Goderich has denied in the
House of Lords, that the influence of the Government has been employed to
induce the Press to support it.
“You will easily perceive how impossible it would be
for
* It was in pursuit of this science, and making
captures for Lady Mulgrave, that he
caught the fever which proved fatal to him. |
Mr. C. to do this after consenting to adopt the project
which you recommend.
