The son of John Thornton of Clapham (1720-90) and brother of Henry Thornton (d. 1815), he was a director of the East India Company and MP for Bridgwater (1785-90) and Colchester (1790-1817). He was an abolitionist and gambler who died a bankrupt in New York.
