Of Kirky near Catterick in North Yorkshire; the son of William Bruere, Secretary of the Government of Calcutta; educated at Harrow, Edinburgh, and Jesus College, Cambridge, he was the employer of the poet John Jones. He was the brother-in-law of William Otter, Bishop of Chichester.
