The son of Lord Augustus Fitzroy; educated at Westminster and at Peterhouse, Cambridge, he was MP for Bury St. Edmunds, 1756 to 1757, when he succeeded to the dukedom. He was prime minister, 1768-70, and chancellor of Cambridge University, 1769.
