Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, he was a barrister on the Northern Circuit, philanthropist, editor of Milton's Areopagitica, and friend of Wordsworth. Southey described him as “coming nearer the ideal of a perfect man than any other person whom it has ever been my good fortune to know.”
