The son of Charles Yorke (1722–1770); educated at Harrow and Queens' College, Cambridge, he was MP for Cambridgeshire (1780-90) before succeeding to the title; he was lord lieutenant and viceroy of Ireland (1801-06) and supported Catholic emancipation.
