Son of the second earl (d. 1841) he was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford and was MP for King's County (1821-34). He was a notable astronomer, president of the Royal Society (1848-1854), and chancellor of Trinity College, Dublin (1862-1867)
