Banker and philanthropist educated at Winchester College (where Sydney Smith was a classmate), New College, Oxford, and Lincoln's Inn; in 1829 he succeeded his brother John Shute Duncan as keeper of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. He was an intimate friend of Bishop Richard Mant.
