The son of the poet of the same name. He was educated at Winchester under Warton and at New College, Oxford; he served as the secretary to the British embassy at Florence before becoming rector of Writtle in 1814. He collected British art, and donated the Reynolds portrait of Thomas Warton to Oxford.
