Originally a silversmith, he was assistant preacher at How's Lane Baptist Church, Plymouth when convicted of sedition in 1793. On one account, Robert Southey visited him in prison and left him the manuscript of Wat Tyler which was surreptitiously transcribed from his copy in 1817.
