Originally a parliamentary reporter for the Morning Chronicle, in 1817 he succeeded Street as editor of The Courier; he wrote novels, contributed fiction to Blackwood's, the Literary Gazette, and other periodicals, and in 1841 succeeded Theodore Hook as the editor of John Bull.
