The daughter of Jonathan Shipley, bishop of St. Asaph; in 1783 she married the orientalist Sir William Jones (d. 1794) with whom she traveled to India. Maria Edgeworth described her in 1818 as a “thin, dried, tall old lady, nutcracker chin, penetrating, benevolent, often-smiling, black eyes.”
