Educated at Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities, and Balliol College, Oxford (Snell Exhibitioner), he was chaplain to Princess Charlotte, Dean of Edinburgh (1818-32) and Rector of Easington, Yorkshire (1832-40). He contributed to the Edinburgh Review.
